I recently watched the Woody Harrelson documentary Kiss the Ground . Whilst I always have what an awareness of the importance of soil to growth and indeed life, this documentary opened my eyes.

“Kiss the Ground” explores regenerative agriculture and its potential to address environmental challenges, particularly soil degradation and climate change. The film highlights several key learnings and takeaways:

  1. Soil Health: The documentary emphasises the critical role of soil health in sustaining life on Earth. It explains how modern agricultural practices, such as monocropping and excessive use of chemicals, have depleted and eroded soil, leading to decreased fertility and carbon loss.
  2. Regenerative Agriculture: The documentary introduces the concept of regenerative agriculture, which focuses on building healthier, carbon-rich soils. This approach involves implementing practices like cover cropping, crop rotation, and reduced tillage to regenerate the soil.
  3. Carbon Sequestration: One of the central themes of the film is the ability of healthy soils to capture and store carbon from the atmosphere. By sequestering carbon in the soil, regenerative agriculture can play a crucial role in mitigating climate change.
  4. Diverse Ecosystems: The documentary stresses the importance of biodiversity in agriculture. By mimicking natural ecosystems and incorporating diverse crops and livestock, regenerative farming can enhance resilience and reduce the need for chemical inputs.
  5. Water Conservation: The film underscores how regenerative practices can improve water retention in the soil, reducing the need for excessive irrigation and helping combat drought and desertification.
  6. Sustainable Livestock Management: The documentary also discusses the role of livestock in regenerative agriculture. It shows how holistic grazing practices, like those of Joel Salatin, can restore grasslands, improve soil health, and sequester carbon.

In summary, “Kiss the Ground” is a thought-provoking documentary that underscores the vital role of soil health and regenerative agriculture in addressing environmental issues. By focusing on carbon sequestration, biodiversity, and sustainable farming practices, the film encourages us to reevaluate our approach to food production and offers hope for a more sustainable and resilient future. It also emphasises that individuals, farmers, governments, and industries all have a part to play in this transformative journey towards a healthier planet. That’s where we step in. We are all responsible for climate change and we hope on our farm we can do our part to create a haven for nature as we work towards full sustainability and neutrality.
