As autumn settles in on Our 200 Acre Farm, deciduous trees begin to drop their leaves, covering the ground in a crunchy blanket of potential. Instead of sending these leaves to green waste, you can turn them into rich, crumbly compost that will feed your garden for seasons to come.
Why Compost Autumn Leaves?

2️⃣ Adding Leaves to Your Compost Pile
Leaves are high in carbon and should be balanced with nitrogen-rich “green” materials for effective composting. A good compost recipe is:
- 1 part green (nitrogen): food scraps, green garden trimmings, manure.
- 2–3 parts brown (carbon): dry leaves, straw, shredded paper.
Layer your compost with greens and leaves, moistening each layer as you go. Chopping leaves with a mower before adding speeds up decomposition.

If you have more leaves than your compost can handle, making leaf mould is another excellent option:

🍂 Leaves matting together? Shred or mix with other browns like straw to improve airflow.
